    INTRODUCTION At the present time, distances are passed over with so much celerity and comfort, that the num- ber of tourists, who visit foreign countries for the purpose of either amusing or instructing them- selves is immense; while the number of invalids resorting to the south of France or Italy to escape the severities of a northern winter increases every year.
