The Royal Society performed a co-ordinating function in respect of the views of scientific societies in relation to legislation concerning experiments on animals. Paton resigned from the ad hoc Committee on 20 March, 1980 (note to Sir David Philips): "As you may have heard, I was asked to go on the Advisory Committee on Animal Experiment, and have accepted. I think I should resign from the RS ad hoc Committee, so could you please accept my resignation and mention it."
