    A.D. 1870, 24th March. N° 860. Apparatus for Administering Nitrous Oxide Gas. (This Invention received Provisional Protection only.) PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by Sunderland Mawson at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his Petition, on the 24th March 1870. I, Sunderland Mawson, of Bradford, in the County of York, Dentist, 5 do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for “ Improvements in Apparatus Employed in the Administration of Nitrous Oxide Gas (or other Gas that may be Inhaled) for Indicating the Quantity at each and every Inhalation,” to be as follows :— This Invention relates to apparatus employed by dentists in the 10 administration of the above-named or other suitable gas to patients previous to operations' in dental or other surgery, which apparatus is constructed after the manner of ordinary illuminating gas holders; but heretofore there has been no certain or correct means of indicating or shewing the quantity of gas administered to a patient.
