Bound volume of manuscript and printed memoranda, proposals, plans, inspection reports, instructions, etc, relating to military sanitation and the medical service in India, mostly written by Ross whilst Surgeon in charge, HM 21st Hussars, India.

Documents cover diet, rations and food preparation; sanitary fixtures, fittings and equipment; sewerage and drainage systems; barracks and hospital hygiene; rules for hospital sergeants and dispensary apprentices. Includes Ross's scheme for lock-hospitals to prevent and control disease among prostitutes and soldiers, 1861; designs for an iron air tight receptacle for removing excrement, 1864; memorials to the Indian Government, 1867-1868, on diminished prospects for promotion in HM Bengal Medical Establishment since the abolition of a number of high administrative offices in 1866, and on proposals to reform the Medical Retiring Fund.

At back of volume loose, off-print of article printed in the Indian Medical Gazette, Jun 1877; 'On army hospital corps' by Deputy Surgeon-General J T C Ross, FRCS, with draft of letter to Frederick Sleigh Roberts, QMG of India, (1875-1878) and Roberts' reply.

First item in volume is a manuscript dated 1850, thereafter material covers Jun 1861-Oct 1868, and the off-print is dated 1877.
